Help!Stuck in parking brake

My 1997 Ford Escort has been stuck in park for 4 mos. and I don't know what to do. I cannot afford to have someone come over to fix it. The shifter is auto and on the floor.

question

Can you shift to netural with engine off?. If so it is the saftey switch. Turn the key to unlock steering and try to shift.

In the '97 escort automatic there is a little round plastic patch on the shifter console. It's in the upper right hand corner. Pop that off and insert a metal coat hanger straightened out and pretend like you are pushing on a button or trying to touch a lever and you should be able to release the transmission from lock so that you can push the brake and move the gear to neutral.

stuck in park

I tried both recommendations you've made "Michael Van" & "Goldstar".

I think I will try it with a coat hanger, Goldstar, because I tried to reach that little hole release with a screwdriver and maybe it was too short to do anything.

I'll let you know what happens.

Thank you both for your response.
