replacing engine for 1993 inifinit j30

i am likely to replace the engine in my 1993 infiniti j30, but at the moment my garage is finding it slow-going locating one - though they tell me there shouldn't be a problem.

but the delay has me thinking, if they are not able to find a re-built - or even if they do find it - is it possible to install a new/re-built engine from some other car? i'm thinking, it would be nice to have something with more punch, more speed than the original - really, the relatively modest performance of the original engine is one of the few complaints i have had concerning this wonderful car.

The Nissan Maxima uses the same motors. For your year vehicle, it should be the 3.0L V6, correct?

that sounds right, but i'm not certain, and can't locate the information (though it's probably right under my nose!).

i mentioned this to my mechanic, who just informed me he can't get a rebuilt from either jasper or another outfit he deals with regularly, and he said if that was the case (about the maxima) 'they' usually cross reference those things, and they didn't in this case.

can you clarify or document or provide a link or resource about this, and whether the engines are identical or at least so similar as to be interchangeable?

thanks.

Not sure how much you were planning on spending, but I surfed a bit and found one here for about $3400:

http://www.bestrebuiltengines.com/NISSAN6.htm
http://www.atk-engines.com/display_engine.cfm

And here for about $2800:

http://www.jer-us.com/Applications/infiniti.html

And about $2500 here:

http://remanufactured.com/Infinity_Engines.htm

If you Google "remanufactured engines" or "rebuilt engines", or "used engines" you'll find quite a few sources.

Also searched ebay motors and got a couple of hits for used ones under $1000, one of which is described like this:

"You are bidding on a used 93-97 Infiniti J30 or 92-96 Nissan 300zx nonturbo engine assy."; So, possibly the cross-reference could be '92-96 ZX?

hotinokc and towguy -

thanks!

neil

p.s. is it possible to replace this engine with a different one - e.g. an engine with more power, more acceleration? that is, can engines be adapted to fit different vehicles?

Generally no, due to the computerized nature of vehicles nowadays.

Not to mention the the transmission and suspension may not welcome a bigger motor.
