2001 Buick Century Transmission
My 2001 Buick Century w/ automatic transmission and 25,000 miles has been experiencing a strange occurance over the past year - has occurred 4 times.
When I shift into reverse the vehicle won't move OR it'll begin to move then stop as if I had shifted into park. If I immediately go to Neutral, the car will begin to go forward. Not the result I was expecting.
I typically shut off the car - shift to neutral, and roll it back and forth. Then I start it back up and it operates normally.
Obvioulsy this is a concern - brought it to buick and aamco. Test drives showed nothing but both gave me a quote of $3,000 to replace it.
Any suggestions on whether this is purely a new transmission or something electronic like a limit switch or something?

I would get another opinion, hot; a 6 year old tranny with only 25,000 miles on it should not need to be overhauled (and FWIW, if it DOES need to be overhauled, I guarantee you can find a good quality independent tranny shop that should be able to do it for about HALF what you were quoted). My first thought was "linkage", altough I don't completely discount the possibility that something is failing internally. If it IS an internal problem, it's quite possible it can be repaired fairly cheaply; there are a LOT of parts (EXPENSIVE parts) that would not need to be replaced, even during an overhaul, on a tranny with such low mileage.

Buick trans problem
I agree with tow a car with this few miles shouldnt have major problems. At only 4,000 mi a year I wonder if you have something hanging up. Try changing the fluid and add a bottle of "Lube Guard" available at NAPA stores. If it don't fix it you are not out thousands of dollars.RW

OK. THanks for the input guys. There is more input/feedback from the two posts i have received here than from the hours on the phone w/ Buicks Customer Service group in Detroit and the dealership here in Wash DC area.
