96 ford f150 noise turning steering wheel
I have a 1996 ford f150 that has a noise when you turn the steering wheel. It almost sounds like a spring is loose it has a tinny or scraping sound to it. It also has a slight catch like it may be going to lock up. It has been doing this for several weeks. I am wondering if this could cause the airbag to deploy or cause a fire maybe wires rubbing? Anyone know what is loose inside? Thank you!

This is happening in the stearing wheel I take it?
It could be the clockspring in the column. Disconnect your battery and pull the plastic trim off around the column and see if something is binding up in there.

Yes the sound is under the steering wheel inside the truck. It does sound like a spring catching and releasing. If it is a spring is it a major operation to fix? Everything is working ok like turn signal etc. Can the steering wheel be removed without any problems with the airbag? I will check it out and remove the plastic panel as you said to do. I am mainly worried about wires shorting out and catching fire. Thanks for your reply!

You can disconnect the battery and the airbag will not go off. Even with the battery connected, it will not go off, but be safe and disconnect the battery. Try to obtain the Chilton's or Haynes manual for steering wheel disassembly. I don't think it will be that difficult.

I removed the plastic housing and the key tumbler. The noise was the spring under the steering wheel. I lubed it and it quit making the sound. Not sure how long it will last before needing replaced but it works great now. Thanks for the great info!
