windshield wiper issue 97 cavalier

hi. i've had a 97 cavalier for almost a month now and while i was driving to work today (in our springtime blizzard in wisconsin) my wipers all of a sudden stopped moving. i didn't crash or anything, but when i got the car off of the road and stopped i tried to figure out what was wrong. here's what i know..

-the motor is fine, i can hear it going when i turn the wipers on
-the fuse is fine
-the wipers have quite a bit more play in them than they did before. it's like they're not "locked" together, or whatever gear they use to move has failed. i can move the drivers side one half way up the windshield before the passenger one moves at all.
-it sucks

any ideas out there that i could use before i turn it over to a mechanic?
thanks a bunch!

Sounds like the nuts holding the wiper arms on may have come loose. Make sure the wiper motor is parked and remove the caps at the bottom of the wiper arm and check to make sure the nuts are tight. If they are tight the motor may be on its way out

If both wipers stopped at the same time it may be where the assembly connects to the motor the gear could be stripped.
