cutting mirror glass

The driver's side rearview mirror on my van fell out. I've been to Autozone, Napa, Advance Auto, etc. to find the replacement but no one carries it. The dealer wants $40 for the mirror glass alone. To me, this sounds outrageous. Has anyone here ever used a glass cutter and cut their own? If it was a straight cut I don't think I'd have a problem, but it is all curved.

You might locate a new mirror at a junk yard. Auto mirror glass is mirrored on both sides and conforms to DOT standards. It is not like regular mirrors. Try searching for the mirror you need on the internet to find better pricing. You can begin at http://www.auto-glass.com/carmirror.htm

Maybe you can get a glass shop to help you out. Yes, the original glass is mirrored on the top surface, but you can repair it with regular mirror glass - I've done it this way for an economical repair.
