Fuel filter or ????

I have an 89 Chevy Blazer with a problem....it seems that when I hit the gas tank with a mallet, the engine starts up....however, if I don't do that the blazer won't start, the engine turns over but does not connect enough for start up....so if anyone out there knows or has an inkling of what this might be...never know. I don't want to have to change a lot of other parts that might not even be related to the issue at hand....

thanks..

Don't know about the Blazer - but know that a lot of vehicles now have the fuel pump in the fuel tank..... I know you didn't want to hear that......

Have to go along with thezster on this if the fuel pump is in the gas tank. Sound like it is sticking and not pumping. Also could just a bad ground.

Before spending $s on a pump, check the wiring for a good connection. What does the pump sound like when it does work? They are often noisier when they're on the last legs.

I would bet on the pump. The thump test you describe is a fairly common troubleshooting method to confirm a bad pump, but definitely check wiring and connections.
