Car chugs at 40 mph sometimes
91 chevy corsica 3.1 MFI I talked to you guy about the EGR a while back.
http://forum.doityourself.com/showthread.php?t=289645&highlight=91+chevy+corsica
The other day i was driving, and I put the pedal to the floor on this car and it felt like it did not want to go bogged down but until i let off the petal and pushed on the pedal and it took off fine. And today i was coming home i had my foot on the pedal about 1/4 of the way and was doing about 35-40 mph, it started to chugg then after a few seconds it went away. I checked the spark plugs they looked old. None of them had gas on them, so all the gas is being burned. i had to re gap them.
Could this be from the egr valve. When i give it some gas i can at least get the tires to bark.
any suggestions
Thanks

Do you have proper fuel pressure? Have you checked your fuel filter? I have not read your other thread in it's entirety, so forgive me if you have already answered this.
and yes, a bad EGR valve can cause your symptoms.

I beleave it does because the car idols great (i forgot to mention that) I have not checked the fuel filter.
would it help you if i told you this to:
A couple of weeknds ago the car started to over heat. It did this while doing a paper rought in town. i beleave it is because the fan does not kick on. IT works but does not kick on. We were just going to wire that to a toggle switch. we have not done this yet bec since then it has not over heated.

You can test most EGR's by taking your hand and push the diaphram in the EGR open while the engine is idling and it should make it stall out. Check it while reving the engine, too. Feel that pintle, I think it is called and while you rev the engine up and down with your hand on the acclerator cable, feel that the EGR valve is actually opening and closing. I assume this is how they still work. Been a while! Oh, I think most of those electric fans wont turn on untill temps of around 240 degrees. Well, after the thermostat has opened. You might wanna check for clogged Catalyc Convertor, too. I used to just step on gas and brake both while in drive and emergency brake on and rev it up and listen. If it felt like the engine lacked power while reving up, I would have someone do that while I checked out exhaust pipe for the flow of air out and the temp of it.

This egr valve is electrical. when i start the car up something rattles under the car, i found out that when i hit on the exhust pipe that something was rattling in the catalitc convertor. it has good back pressure. i was told that the fan ran off a relay and that could be bad or the sending unit for detecting the temp.
this car has 142,000 on it now, i am thinking that the problems we are having now should of happpened a couple of years ago. ya know

This is what i did so far. I cleaned the egr valve, i made sure all the valves moved and put back to gether. When i took it off i noticed that there was so oil in the plenum where i took the EGR off of. i notice that this is comeing from the pcv valve plastic hose that connects into air filter intake (big tube). Is this good or bad?
I took it for a drive and it the same thing, it started to chug. It seems like it only does this when its warm. I hopeing that is not because the car is on E. Because the car does not stall when it idols. I can hear the pump kick on.
Oh i forgot to mention that it seems to hesitat for a split second when i tap the gas.
i have an automobile repair manual coming for this car in a few days.
I am thinking that is is a good possibility that it needs gas filter. The one on the car looks old and with some rust spots.
Thanks for you help so far

Oil will come out of the pcv to be reburned.
To minimize this on my Maxima, I purchased some rubber tubing, fittings, and a clear oil seperator typically found on air compressors, etc, and attached it between my pcv valve and the intake.
This modification prevents alot of the oil from entering the manifold again and gaining better fuel mileage among a "slight" increase in HP.

all fixed
Yesterday i changed the fuel filter $8.79, might of of helped but did not take care of the problem. not to mention the gas that sparyed in my eye even though i thought all the pressure was released. Earlyer today i checked the compter for any codes and recived code 22 TPS sensor $40. Replaced that still did not fix it. Battery light came on, narowed it down to that altenator failing to charge. Replace that $89. Took the car for a test drive, put it to the floor. No more Chugging.
Thanks

EGR valves operate on intake manifold vacuum. So when your foot is on the throttle you lose manifold vacuum so I don't realy think your EGR valve is causing your problem. Now if you said when you come to stop it wants to stall out, that is a classic EGR symptom because you need full manifold vacuum at or near idle and a sticky EGR valve is like having a hole in your intake manifold. Since you said your plugs looked worn and you had to re-gap them, I would do a fresh tune-up. Replace with a good set of plugs and wires and cap and rotor if it has one and don't skimp use quality parts not the cheapo stuff.
Best of luck !

My other thread closed because it got to long no big deal, i did not know how to contact him to re-open for one last word.
here is my up date that fixed my car:
replaced air filter, car still ran bad, some just out of the blue i thought i would check my vacum line from the map sensor to the engine. It turns out that hose was split along the edge. I took it for a drive it did not chuge any more and it did not stall out on me. I beleave it was like this for 4 or 5 months.
Now you guys will not have to hear about my car any more. Coputer is free of codes.
And now i figure it out. Now i can't wait to find out how much better my MPG is. =)
