state inspection question?
My step son (the dummy) wiped out the Honda Accord my wife and I got him. What happened is he got impatient zoomed around a slower driver lost control went over a curb and the impact of the curb was under the rear door passanger side.
The damage is the car is bent because it bent the structure under the door enough to make the back door have a big gap were the window sill is.
Not only that he hooked a fence and tore the whole rear bumper cover off.
He got a new wheel and tire and had it alighned so it would track straight.
The question is the rear bumper has side marker lights and when it came off the wires were ripped out.
Do you have to have side marker lights for state inspection? State is Texas.
Simply amazing how a person can turn a nice car into a hunk of junk in one day. All I can say is he better finish paying me for the car sorry I have to vent.

It is illegal in I believe all 50 states not to have side markers. Call a local inspection station and ask them.
Though, I know you have to have the front sides, not sure about the rears.

Ok
OK I will pass on to the kid that he better figure a way to get the bumper and lights back on as his inspection is coming up soon.
This kid has wrecked every car or pickup he has owned what a waste of a good car.

I don't think I would be getting him anything. Once would have been enough. After that, if he is that irresponsible, that's his problem how to get a car and maintain it.
How else is he going to learn responsibility for his actions?

I once got hit while parked and it was my 1979 z28. I took it to a frame shop and they charged like $75 to hook it up and $25 for 15 minutes of pull time to straighten out the frame. Just a thought! Bent frames dont necessarily mean totalled. Plus, to teach your Son some respect for automobiles why not find an old car for $100-$200 in the newspaper that needs alot of work and have him put his hardearned money into it fixing it up and getting it to pass state inspection and I bet he will think twice about wrecking it...

good advice
Here is the thing he actually was given a old caprice that had been sitting for years but my wife for some reason thought the Honda would be better for him (more reliable) as he had just gotten a new job.
So one day she went out to the new car dealer and bought it for him. ( I was ticked).
He does not know how to work on cars and I dont have the time as I have a full time job.
We got the Honda had a new water pump and timing belt put in just to start from scratch as Hondas self destuct if it breaks. He had a good car 130 thousand miles on it and he screwed it up.
Very irresponsible for a 32 year old man.

Yeah! I'd say! I'm almost 40 and I don't have anyone buying me vehicles. In fact I NEVER had one bought for me. I had to buy all my own and work on them myself. Although it may too late for him, since bad habits are hard to break, for others it makes sense to do as newhomowner said. I maintain all of my own vehicles and take very good care of them. There is something to be said for a little sweat equity.
When I read your first post, I was under the impression your son was a teen, not a fully grown, supposedly responsible adult. It sounds like he doesn't care about his things. I would let him fend for himself. You know...tough love.

Sorry 'bout the outlaw trouble.
I'm a PA state cert saftey and emissions mech and in Pennsylvania it's law to have functioning marker lights, can't say 'bout TX but it probably is law.
Use to have buddy in high school who managed to destroy everything he touched.........we called him "The Master of Disaster". Mabey he's the same guy.
