Coil burnout

I,m thinking of buying a 93 grand cherokee 4.0 eng. 180.000 miles. The guy said he had to replace the coil 2 times. What can cause a coil go out so fast. He did not say how long it took for it give out the jeep runs fine.

93 jeep

I would look at the ballast resistor. Check the voltage at the "bat" side of the coil it should be less than 12 volts when the engine is running. It only gets full voltage when cranking, not running.
