Auto Transmission slipping

96 Olds Aurora hesitates when put into gear. There is a slight whine when driving and seems to run at a higher than normal RPM. I have been told that it won't move out of Park on occasion but it did for me. Fluid level is fine. It has 95,000 miles.

These are signs of a failing transmission.

It also could be your torque converter.

What color is the tranny fluid? Does it smell burnt?

Thanks for the reply. The fluid is brown in color and has a normal odor.

Unless it's been serviced recently, a fluid & filter change wouldn't hurt - brown is not good -, although I suspect OKC's suggestion of a failing tranny may be on the mark.

If you have never changed the fluid before, I actually would not recommend it now. That old fluid is probably keeping your tranny working partially for now.

The shavings and other particles in the fluid now are providing the tranny friction to keep functioning.

Changing the fluid might actually make it worse.

My thinking, too, on the service, but that advice is usually for someone with a tranny that ISN'T having problems where you don't want to tempt fate. In this case, there's a problem already that's not likely to go away. Pound - what OKC says is common thinking with trannies. At this point it's probably a crap-shoot. What you need to decide is whether you are going to live with it as is or fix it.
