no air conditioning
last year i heard a loud, long hissing noise coming from my glove box area. since then i have had no a/c. i have a 2001 kia sephia. i havent had it fixed b/c i think it will be very expensive. any thoughts on how much this might cost? do you think my compressor or other parts might be seized or frozen due to lack of use?

If you heard it from the glovebox area, most likely the one of the A/C lines broke. I have never seen this, then again it is possible. If this is what the problem is, it will probably cost you some cash just in labor.
Get yourself a pressure gauge hose from a local auto store. Usually they come with a little can of 134a refrigerant. Attach this hose to your low pressure size fitting (usually has a blue cap on it). Run vehicle with A/C on max and see what reading you have.
If it's showing nothing, then most likely you did blow a line.
Can you hear a click rom the engine area when you try to turn on A/C?
