What's that smell?

I've got a 97 grand cherokee that has developed a god awful smell every time you turn on the heater.Today I pulled the dash and attempted to check in out and found nothing. The heater core is not leaking, the ac evaporater, next to the heater core, in the housing looks fine. I checked the fresh air intake under the cowl and it is clean and so is the heater housing and the duct work!?! What else could it be?If any one has any other suggestions PLEASE let me know.

Some vehicles had cabin filters in those years, check owners manual. And check that the condesate is draining from the hose. Spiders often make homes in the hose and block it, allowing water to sit.

You may also have something decaying, such as leaves (or even some dead creature), somewhere in the ducting, so make sure you check all possible locations for debris.

I once had rats build a nest in mine and that really stunk bad when I turned the heat on after all summer, it smelt like ammonia.
