service engine soon light refers to a problem with the emmission controls and is not related to basic maintence of the engine suggest you have codes read and go from there or you may want to see a shop as it will likely need some parts to fix correctly.

Here's how you can read your own codes:

Read the code on your own using the above advice then fix it and the code should clear itself within 50 miles.

I know autozone will scan OBDII codes free I'd think they'd have a OBDI code reader as well. You can just have them clear it if you don't want to deal with it but it'll probably come back on in 50 miles.

Only other east way to get the light "off" is to pull your dash apart and cover the bulb with electrical tape

OBD-1 you can also disconnect the battery, but I think you should read the code; the light came on for a reason.
