thermostat for 350 chevy

thermostat for 350 chevy

Can anyone tell me which way the thermostat sits?Does the spring part of the stat point up or down?I have it pointing up.its a 1970 350 chevy.

The spring side points into the engine or down. Within the spring is the cylindrical canister that is the wax temperature sensing element that needs to be exposed to the hot coolant of the engine.

If I recall correctly, the stat is located under the housing on top front of intake. Spring should face down, as it has to sense the temperature of the coolant to open and return the hot coolant to top of rad. Those were the days when you could actually get at something.

Spring always towards intake manifold side or oposite side of upper rad hose.
The theromstat is merely the gate keeper that alows hot water to return to the radiator to be cooled. So as the water heats up the spring it opens and alows the water to flow.

Man, I loved those small blocks !
