You can typically loan out the fuel pressure test kit form a Autozone or similar. It attaches to the fuel rail.
Mechanics in your town say they can't test the pressure? They are not good mechanics then.
IS the check engine light on? See if Autozone can scan for trouble codes if there are any. They will do this for free.

easy way is to pull the fuel line at the carb/fuelrail/fuel regulator and pull the coil wire so the car won't start. then turn the engine over and see if the gas squirts out of the line. If it don't its either the fuel pumps bad, or fuel filter clogged. if that all checks out, have it put on a diagnostic machine. cars are getting almost imposible to fix nowadays without a d/machine or a relative with a mechanical degree. I used to be able to tell what kind of motor by just hearing it run back in the 70's, not now. I can't even tell you what kind of car anymore. Back when they had a style thier own it was easy, now they all look alot alike and half of them don't even have badging telling u what they are. WOW, how did I go there? sorry
