Question rear axle replacement-Gear ratio-1987 chevy 4X4 truck

How do I find out how to purchase a different axle. The one on the truck now is not the original and I don't know how to figure the "Gear Ratio"! The axle has a broken differential.

The simplest way to determine ratio, if the gears area accessible is to count the number of teeth on the ring and pinion gears. Then divide the number on the ring by the number on the pinion. That is your gear ratio.
