'96 Explorer compressor clutch replacment?

A local shop is telling me that the A/C compressor clutch is bad on my '96 Ford Explorer with the 5.0 V8. They say that to replace the clutch, the system has to be evacuated and the compressor removed. Is that true? I thought that the clutch could be replaced with the compressor in the car.

Thanks

Alan

Yes, the mechanic is correct. On most vehicles, you can just replace the clutch, but on the Explorer, the whole system has to be discharged and compressor needs to come out.
