where is the fuel pump and how do you change it on a 96 elantra. i'm car stuped, so easy to understand instructions would help, thanks---hat!

If you are car "stupid" this is probably not the task for you.
The pump is inside the fuel tank which needs to be lowered.
What problems are you have to make you want to change the pump?

After researching, your car is one of the lucky few and the filter is located in the engine bay.
Here's the "how-to"
http://www.autozone.com/servlet/UiBroker?ForwardPage=az/cds/en_us/0900823d/80/1d/45/f1/0900823d801d45f1.jsp
Replace it, and see if that helps, if it doesn't, then it's probably the pump.
If it is the pump, you can access it through your back seat. Another plus. My Nissan is set up the same way.

I just replaced the filter on my dads van 96 chevy, They had been having a few problems with it stalling and missing on occasion. It was pretty much stopped up and its the same year as yours so its a good chance that could be the problem. same way with my 93 dakota a couple years ago. The tanks that they pump gas from have a lot of settlement in them and if you happen to get gas when its low in the tank, there are alot of things that can be picked up and pumped into your tank. trash, water, etc. And filters are cheap and not so hard to change on most vehicles and its worth a shot before you have to try the pump. They can be a real pain. And not cheap.

Filter filter
I am all for the filter change it is cheap and easy compared to a pump. do the filter first it sounds like a good chance that is what it could be if you are a little lucky.
