Ford Focus bogs down on take off.

2002 Ford Focus SE, 2.0L DOHC 16 valve, automatic, FWD:

On acceleration from dead stop, engine bogs down and sputters. Have replaced EGR valve and DPFE sensor, which seems to have improved performance everywhere but on take off. Have also noticed water in new (and old) DPFE sensor, seems to be coming from the REF hose. Any advice/suggestions/magic solutions? Thanks in advance!

Just curious, but what led you to change out the egr parts? Was there a check engine light and/or have you scanned it for codes?

Advice from other Focus owners/sites/mechanically-inclined buddies prompted me to replace EGR/DPFE. Seems the DPFE sensor on these cars is notorious for going bad anyway. Auto store scanned and got the code that would also point in this vague direction ("could be a loose gas cap or yer sensors is bad or alot else"). Car had some sputters for about a year with no CEL coming on. Problem got worse and I replaced DPFE with the "new and improved" version from Ford. Performance improved slightly but CEL came on shortly thereafter. Replaced EGR valve, more improvement except during take off, and CEL light has returned.

If you can get it scanned and post the codes back it may help in the troubleshooting.

Trouble code P0401 "Insufficient EGR flow" per free check at Autozone.
