ran out of gas, idles low

I ran out of gas, in my driveway. I put 10 gallons in but when I turn the car on, it hesitates and idles so low it feels like it's going to shut off. now I'm afraid to pull out of my driveway. 2000 Ford Explorer, 8 cylinder.

Sounds like a plugged fuel filter.

When you run out of gas debris from the bottom of your tank often plugs the fuel filter new or old.

Thanks!! Do you think I'll be safe to drive to a repair shop within 10 miles of home?

my 2 cents

I would never ever let my car get so low on gas you are risking a quite expensive repair. My 2000 ford had a fuel pump failure and it cost me big bucks over 1000 dollars to have it replaced. (I had a full tank). Reason is the fuel keeps the pump cool in the tank and keeps air out of it. I dont know if I would drive it with a plugged filter as you might mess up injectors if some of the crud gets by. Yes this is my advice always keep at least a 1/4 tank because late model Ford fuel pumps are costly and not easy to replace.
