engine surge / vacuum leak
I have a 1993 Toyota pick-up and I think I have a vacuum leak but it has mood swings because it doesn't act up all the time. The engine will surge as if it is going to lose all power and then will race up again. It only does it at idle and it is extremely worse when I apply the brakes. Sometimes I can drive it all day without any surging at all. It has been like this for several months with good days and bad.

Hello
Welcome to the forums
It could be a vac. leak
Or it could be 1/2 dozen other things
You could look for a vac or air intake leak by inspecting the engine very, very, carefully and looking for missing, broken, or cracked hoses and such
It could also be a air/fuel filter or an emissions component issue
It could also be a sensor issue
It could also be a few other things
If you don't find a vac/intake problem, and the filters are new, it's best to have the codes read before trying to diagnose it much further
