Pinging Noise

I have a Lexus ES300. While idling and when shut off I get a loud pinging noise on the right side. The service department said it was the catalytic converter "cooling down" and that it was normal. I've heard the metal pinging of other vehicles cooling down and this is much louder. What in your opinion is the cause and solution?

I agree with your service dept. Some are louder than others as the hot metal contracts. It usually gets quieter as the car ages. My opinion, if anyone asks, look very knowledgeable and a little condescending and just say hot catalytic converter.

Angry Pinging Noise

Only problem is, the vehicle is a 2004 model with 26,000 miles. The pinging has not diminished with time.

Start the vehicle up when it has been sitting for a few hours and is cool, then shut it off. Any noise?

If not, it is just the exhaust cooling and is normal like the other poster has said. 26,000 miles is not alot, car is still being broken in.
