1998 Chrysler Sebring tranny
It belongs to a friend and it has about 94000 miles. Started shifting irregular in the 3 forward gears and the check engine light came on. Had it checked out by a local reputable (transmissions only) shop. He says the tranmission unit needs to be rebuilt and I don't dispute it. His estimate is from $1200 to 1800 depending on what they find once they tear it down.
Just looking for a judgement check, does this sound reasonable?

Does it have a warranty? That's a reasonable price for a rebuild. I would however, take it to more then one shop for a proper diagnosis. Chrysler/Dodge of this year had a PCM problem which needed to be reflashed. Might want to check that as well.
What was the troublecode?

The rebuild comes with a one year/12000 mile warranty. Since this is in another city it is not feasible to take it to my home town shop (which I trust) but I did call my guys and got a good feel based on what I could tell them. Also, time is not a luxury so I authorized the work after talking with the owner and seeing his shop. I don't know know about a PCM problem but will keep that tidbit of info handy. Didn't ask what the troublecode was but do know they did a rundown during and after diagnostics.
I had driven the auto and checked the fluid myself and didn't like what I saw. This shop confirmed that: brown, burnt smell, and surely way past maintenance. Based on their warranty I have to believe they'll protect themselves by using the proper fluid, but I'll verify that with them.
Thx for the tips, you guys are great.
