Chevys "Electric" steering in a Malibu?

Would someone explain this "electric" steering that the 2004 and up Malibus have? I have been reading there has been alot of problems.
Does the Impala have the same thing and did this come out in 2004 when the carline was redesigned?

Thanks for the link. That is all the good news if everything works ok, but in the real world, that never happens. I understand all those benifits, but what about the lack of road feel and steering feedback I have seen in many reviews??

In the mean time, I also found these articles;

Yea, I'de be weary about these systems. At least with typical hydraulic systems, you can tell when there is something wrong with your front end because the vibrations would go up the steering wheel. With this electric system, you could probably damage your vehicle even more because you wouldn't know anything way wrong.

I prefer the electronic steering in my 04 Malibu to the hydraulic in my 99 Sonoma.

I haven't read much on this electrical steering but what would happen if your car stalls or dies while you are driving and have no electrical power? Would you still be able to steer?

I asked the dealers service department about that and the reply was it would revert back to manual as a hydraulic system does.
