Swap out worth it

This is again regarding our 1991 Dodge Caravan.

Well it has always burnt some oil and blew blue smoke but recently it started smoking even worse. Previously, we used Bardahls no-smoke and no - leak as a "might as well give it a shot" method, and the smoking wasn't too bad. We tried it again, but we still leave a cloud when idling for long periods, or accelerating especially after sitting at a light for a long time. The option of swapping the engine arose, but with 16 years of age and 256 000 kms under it's belt, would the money be better spent towards a new vehicle? A newer engine would have lower mileage, but our transmission would still have the 256 000...

Sounds to me like bad valve stem seals, but with 256K it is likely all of the above. With that much time/mileage, everything is worn out. A new vehicle payments will likely be less than upkeep on the old one. Cars can be kept running for a long time, but without a total restore, get hard to keep safe and running. My 57 Chevy had that total restore and now is fine, but is no longer a daily driver.
