Unhappy 1998 Ford contour Parking Brake adjustment

Hello I am trying to find out how do you adjust the Parking brake on a 1998 Ford Contour SE car. The manual says that it will automatically adjust by working the parking brake several times. I changed the rear pads and ever since the Parking brake does not work. I tried the several times procedure and it does not work. Is there anywhere where this car can be adjusted. The car will not brake when pulled and even on a completed stop if I let go of the brake while applying the emergency brake the car will still roll..

Please help thanks

There is a pawl on the brake handle that needs to be replaced. Remove the handle and you should see where the cable hooks into. That part needs to be replaced.

It is a part that has notches or grooves to latch into when the handle is being pulled. Kind of hard to describe and I have no pictures to show you.

You HB cable needs adjusting at the HB lever. Take the middle console out and you will see it. Also ensure cable is in good condition front to back under car.

How did you press the rear calipers back? What tool did you use?

Most rear calipers you do not push back in, but you have to turn back in.

Well for my Ford Contour SE I did had to push the caliper back.. I rented the tool from Autozone.. It kinda like you have to twist the caliper in.. You cannot do it with a Vice Grip they do not work.. You have to use that tool.. That was the only way I could put in my new set of breaks...

Hope that helps...
