I have an '89 Olds 88 with approx. 230K miles on it. Up until just a few days ago, it was fine, but now there's a god-awful racket coming from my engine. It rattles loudly, and when the car is turned off, the serpentine belt can be moved back and forth about 6 inches. What's causing this and can it be fixed easily?

First thing to check would be the belt tensioner. It's a spring loaded arm with a pulley on the end that maintains the belt tension. The springs can break allowing the belt to go slack. You replace the whole tensioner asembly.
