2001 jeep cherokee sport

My daughter has a 01 jeep cherokee sport 2wd. The other day the check eng light came on. Haven't got to Autozone to have the code read yet. It was running fine[with the light on] but then the light started flashing[while driving] and was unable to get above 45mph, and would not accelerate. I pulled over and turned it off for a few min. I re-started, light came back on steady and drove normally. I have never a check eng light flash while driving before. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Can't say for sure, but I think a flashing CEL is warning to stop asap and have it checked because some condition exists that could phsically do damage as opposed to something that you could drive forever with no adverse effects.

Better get it "read" as soon as possible.

Along with what tow_guy said, sometimes a failed MAF sensor will not allow motor to get over a certain RPM, usually 2500-3500.

Definetly have it looked at and minimize driving like ^ said.
