Radiator Fan problem
Hello We have a 1998 Plymouth GrandVoyager
started getting hot I checkecd and the radiator fans weren't coming on!
So I got under the van and check the fans with direct power and they came on!
So I then changed the fan relay, The fans worked for a little bit but then they stopped again! I unplugged the connector to the fan relay and looked inside the plug noticed that one of the connector holes had a burnt look on it ,as if it got too hot, so now I am thinking that there is a short somewhere!
Has anyone dealt with something like this?
Any and all help appreciated!!!
Thank you!!!!

If the fans are starting to fail, they will draw more AMPS then what the relay can handle.
There is also a engine temp sensor which actually turns the fan on.
Does this vehicle have A/C? Does the fan turn on with the A/C?

Radiator fan problems
Yes this van does have a/c and yes the fans do come on when the a/c is on!
So if the fans are starting to fail and they then pull more amps it would then burn out the fan relay?
I don't think its the temp sensor because everytime I would replace the fan relay
(4 times) the fans would work for a short time.
So I guess I will be changing the fans!!
Any other suggestion will be appreciated.
Thank you

If your relays are burning out, it sounds like the fan motors are going south like I discussed in my previous post.
You said burn holes, was this on the relay itself, or within the relay box?

Burned spots are not on the relay it self, although, at the bottom of one of the prongs it is slightly melted!
If by ,relay box, you mean the plug that goes into the relay, yes its in the relay box. One of the 4 holes that plug into the prongs on the relay!

Hmmm....you need to have this burned spot repaired. You may be able to get away with just soldering it.
I'm surprised you are not blowing any fuses.
Inspect all wiring that you can see, especially in that harness going to the relay connector.
Do the fans sound normal when they are operating?

If the fans operate with the A/C on then we know that A-The fans are OK and B-The relay is OK............The ECM is what drops the ground for the relay to turn the fans on. The ECM must see the correct engine temp......If the fans DON'T come on and the vehicle overheats, then I'd be checking the coolant temp sensor............There are TWO........One that sends a signal to the ECM, one that operates the dashboard gauge or light............

Hi guy.......While it COULD be a fan issue causing the circuit to run hot........His description doesn't equate to a "nuclear disaster"...........He states the fans DO run with the A/C on..........He seems to be questioning whether they cycle properly with the A/C OFF...........I stand by my first statement

I believe rcjazz already found the root cause to the problem - a burned connector. Though the bank of relays (a/c, fuel pump, ASD, and cooling fan) are known to be a problem on Chrysler products, he changed the cooling fan relay, got a better connection with the new prongs at the relay, but still needs to clean or replace the terminals that plug into the relay.

Radi Fan issue
The problem is that I don't know what could be causing the relay to burn out like that,as per the burnt plug , burn out relay. The only way I can tell that the relay gets burnout is because the fans stop working ,even with the a/c on.
With the a/c on, the car will quickly overheat!! So I am not using the a/c right now.Whew!!! and being in Texas is not good!!!!!
So the fact that the fans are on there way out and therefore because of that pulling more amps may seem to be it!

Chrysler has an updated relay ................probably because of the amperage draw problems. If you have access to Mitchell On Demand or All Data you should be able to pull up more specifics

I don't have acces to those two, other thatn going to the web site bbut if I am not mistaken you have to have a membership or something like that to access vehicle info.
I guess the updated relay would have to be a dealer only part?
Do you know If the Temp sensor goes out would that cause the burnt connector issue?

I have access to AllData for my wifes '01 Stratus. It is a Chystler so I will see if it has any info you can use. I'll post again regarding the result.

Temp sensor won't be running on "system" voltage...........Usually they run on a 5 volt reference signal and by the % of the return signal, the ECM knows how hot the engine is.............

Radi fan issues
Hey guys I think I solve the radiator fan issue!
Thanks to you guys it gave more confidence to try something, even though I still wasn't sure about. I had to do something!!!
I replaced the radiator fans and that seemed to fix it even with the connector to the fan relay having a burned spot on it, I did clean that spot, and hooked it back up!
I just need to really test drive a whole day with the a/c on full blast!!!
Thank you "Wrench47", Mark(HOTINOK) for all your input could've done it without you guys and this site!!!
Thank you very much
God Bless

Awesome!
Make sure you report back here if you need anything else! It always feels good fixing it yourself, doesn't it?
Saves you a butt load of money as well.
