my friends 1966 ford wont cut off by the key
we just got done putting a new steering column on
now we cant get the truck to turn off
does anyone know what the problem is?

Sounds like a bad ignition switch or bad install job.
From another source:
The ignition switch sends power from the switch through the brown wire to the ballast resistor, then from the ballast resistor to the + side of the ignition coil. At the same time the ignition switch send power through the gray wire to the Oil Pressure Sending unit. When the key is in the OFF position, the ignition switch cuts power to these two circuits.
Saying this, you have power still getting to these wires.

I was wondering about the bad install part. Like perhaps if when the key is turned clockwise to start, the guts in the switch turn/make contact as they should. But then when the switch is turned off, the entire cylinder spins CCW without actually turning the guts inside the cylinder. Like someone never got the key cylinder locked down on the steering column. Could be wrong, but curious if this might not be possible.
