1992 Geo Storm

My son was driving down the road and all of a sudden a whining sound came about and then smoke came into the car and he sould see it coming from behind his vehicle. His power steering went out. He drove for a few minutes to a parking lot. His ac compressor was already not working before this. I went to pick him up and the belt was gone. What caused all the smoke though? Thanks

Might have seized the engine.

If not the motor, the belt might have been the thing producing the smoke......

What did the smoke smell like? What color was it?

Check the oil

Replace the belt

See if it runs.....

If it's a single serpentine belt, the AC compressor may have frozen
The belt could only hold out so long against that (pulley not turning), and would finally melt...making a bit of a smoke show on the way out

Also when belts go it's not uncommon for them to wrap themselves around various accessories and/or their pulleys where they start to smoke and make weird noises. At the very least he'll need a new belt and now will be the time to replace both the tensioner and idler pulleys even if neither was the culprit leading to the failed belt.

Had the ac been out for a while or this happened just prior to the smoke signals?
