starter won't shut off. please help

Question starter won't shut off. please help

I have a 1998 Toyota Tacoma 5 speed and the starter is stuck on , it stays on even after turning key off. I have disconnected battery cable. what do I need to do to fix this problem ?

There is an electrical problem -- obviously. I would suspect the ignition switch is faulty.

Study this diagram to understand, and you can conduct appropriate voltmeter tests. You can test to rule out stuck ignition switch or bridged (like arc-welded together contact points inside) contacts in the relay or solenoid by testing the correct wires.

I don't know what your ability level is, at this point, in general electrical diagnosing. Of the various electrical problems that can occur in vehicles, IMO, this is one of the more easy ones to run down exactly where the problem is of those 3 things I listed.

starter stck on

I have removed the relay and wires from ignition switch when battery cable reattached the starter still runs and turns engine over. Any suggestions.

The seloniod which sits on the starter, has its points stuck or welded together. That makes for a direct circuit from the battery, thru the seloniod and starter, to ground, regardless of whether the ignition switch is on or off.

Replacing the seloniod / starter assembly will cure the problem. I don't think they sell the solenoids separately.
