ball bearings mercedes benz 15 passenger van

Yesterday my driver had to stop really fast. Afterwards the front wheel on the drivers side started making a continuous noise. The repair shop says the ball bearing need replaced. If that is true does both sides need to be replaced or just the side making the noise.

Front wheel bearings should be replaced at the same time.

What type of noise is it making? A humming type noise?

I'd hesitate to trust that diagnosis just based on "noise". I've never seen a bearing go bad just because of one panic stop. I'd examine the brakes. The brakes can often make a noise that is mistaken for bad bearings.

Like maybe the caliper not retracting? Maybe it's getting a little hot down there and dragging too.
