oil level

oil level

opinions on too much,or too little oil in crankcase. My car takes 4.5 qts. of oil. is it o.k. to put in 5 qts,or just 4 qts.and add as i go?

You will be ok with 5, but with nothing more. Too much oil can cause internal engine damage.

Thanks for your reply. The reason i asked is that i have anew car and the manual says 4.5 qts. I don't do my own oil changes anymore and suspect service station wouldn't bother to open up a can for a 1/2 quart topping off.
maybe the dealer would,but other than that my concern was in overfilling by
1/2 quart.

Most oil places use a oil nozzle dispenser attached to a drum of oil, attached to the dispenser is a qty gauge so they know how much is being put in.

If they don't use this, it's typical for them to put in 5 qrts. 1/2 qrt won't harm anything.

The oil change place should show you the dipstick, with oil at full, regardless of what any lit. says about oil capacities
