Weird gear/shifting problem

I have a 1999 Mercury Mountaineer, 5.0L, V8, automatic.

When I shift, the gear the car goes into doesn't match the display on the dash. When I put the car into 'R', I am actually in park. When I am in 'N' I am in reverse; when I am in 'D' I am in neutral; and when I am in 2nd I am in drive.

The car drives fine and it stays in gear. I thought it might be a problem with the overdrive, but it happens whether the overdrive is on or off. The shift is mounted on the steering column if that makes any difference.

Any ideas?

Your overdrive is fine. I haven't adjusted one of these in years, but, if you look carefully along the steering column under the dash, you will find where the linkage from the column to the indicator is. Then it's a matter of adjustment.
