Smelly Air Conditioner

My son has a 2001 Olds Intrigue. Recently, whenever he turns on the air conditioner it emits a strong, moldy smell. It is worse when it initially is turned on.

He has also notices that he does not see any condensation puddles that usually seem to occur under a car when the air conditionar has been running.

Any ideas on cause and corrective actions?

The evaporator core drain tube could be plugged, but if so, the water would leak inside the car and soak the carpets. The drain tube should be located under the passenger side firewall area. It may be difficult to get to with the car on the ground, or even jacked up for that matter. A hoist would be ideal. I usually use compressed air to unclog the restriction. Sometimes I use mechanics wire, or a skinny wire coat hanger. As far as the smell goes, check the carpet in the front seating area, you may have to remove it if wet, to dry it thoroughly. We drill a small hole in the evaporator housing and spray a disinfectant and deoderizer to help nuturalize the odor, but that don't always work.
