How do you change a front lug on a 2000 Dodge Caravan?

I am working on a 2000 Dodge Caravan and need to replace a broken front lug. I see the hub is held on with the standard cotter key witha serrated cover and nut. Do I simply remve that nut and slide the hub off to gain access to the back of the hub? I know I have to remove the caliper prior to removing the hub. Any help will be appreciated.

Yes, the hub will be on the end of the front drive axle with the cv joints integrated. The nut you're referring to is the spindle nut. After you take it off the hub will slide off. The hub may come off a little hard.

When you reinstall you'll need a torque wrench and the torque settings for the spindle nut.

Hope this helps,

Bob

How do you change a front lug on a 2000 Dodge Caravan?

Bob,
Thanks for the reply and the advice. I have worked on many rear wheel drive cars but believe it or not I never had to go this deep on a front wheel drive. I am also seasoned enough to stay away from unknown areas. What sometimes looks like a piece of cake ends up being a career. I really appreciate your help. Have a great day.

I've had a couple of those careers myself.

Good luck

most vehicles allow you to change out a wheel stud without removing the hub you may find you can install a new one fairly easily after removing brake caliper and brake rotor.

Thanks Bejay. I will give that a try before I go to the trouble of removing the hub.

How do you change a front lug on a 2000 Dodge Caravan?

I would like to thank all of you that replied to my post. I just completed this repair. As Bejay suggested once the caliper and rotor were off there was enough room to slide the stud through the hub. It was interesting that there was enough room to do this from the front of the vehicle (under the caliper) but not from the back. Oh well. I am not one to knock success. Thanks again to all. I was teaching my 13 year old grandson how to do this repair. He thanks you as well. He only rapped his knuckles once. Back to my full time career - retirement!!! LOL

Awesome! Glad everyone here could help you. It feels good to accomplish these types of task yourself instead of emptying your wallet to have someone else do it.
