I have a 2001 Montero Sport. It is gently driven & I only have 53,000 miles on it. When I accelerate and the speedometer is between 30-40 mph the vehicle kind of sputters. Once past 40 mph everything is OK. I thought fuel injectors. I spoke to a mechanic over the phone & he asked me if my front tires were worn. I told him yes. He said that was probably the problem. Any input?

His logic is likely that you have an out of alignment, or wheel balancing problems with the front tires and at the speed you're interpreting an engine sputter you have a shimmy from the front tires/suspension. That could well be.
You could distinguish between the two, somewhat, by holding the transmission in a lower gear and accelerating to the speed you usually have the problem. If you have the same vibration there's a good chance the issue is related to the tires, etc. as opposed to the engine.
Hope this helps,
Bob
