Question 91 Lumina motor dies when let up on the gas

My 91 Lumina (3.1 ltr) runs fine until it warms up. It seems to die when I let off the gas, and motor surges now & then, & sometimes the surge will make it die. I have been putting it in neutral when slowing down to keep it from dying, but the longer it runs the more it does this. Do I need to change the Idle Air Control valve/switch or is it something else? Begging for help!!!

Yes you have a problem

Sounds to me like you have a fuel filter pluged up,or a fuel pump on its way out.Try this first. After you change the filter run a fuel injector cleaner in your gas.Hope this helped.RICK

You might want to pull a couple of the easiest plugs to get at and 'read' them. I'd be curious to what you report back about plug color.

Hi Rick, I replaced the fuel filter earlier this year ( maybe the new one is bad) , will check the pump, & run some sea foam thur as it seems to help the other 2 cars we have. Reason we thought it was the Idle Air Control valve is because it was doing pretty much the same thing & friend took it off & cleaned it last year, (he has passed away since). Will work on it as soon as this crazy wind dies down, LOL! Good ol Kansas weather,
Thanks so much & will let you know whats up. Shanny

Will check plugs, was also told to check fuel filter & pump. Just waiting for this crazy Kansas wind to die down to get at it.
Thanks, Shanny

I used to have a 92 Lumina and had to clean the IAC all the time. I've also heard that sometimes the pintle can stick causing the IAC to fail. Mine would always get full of carbon. I would also check for vaccumm leaks though.

does it just do this in gear if you put it in neutral does it idle if so then its the lockout converter on the trans just pull the plug and it will be fine very common on older GM
