To get some idea, you could call up your GM garage and ask the service manager if he'd be so kind to look up in his book how many hours are allotted for the changeout. That way you'd have some idea of difficulty. Consider the time is for pros, so double it?

It can be a difficult task for someone with no mechanical skills. The whole dash pretty much needs to come out to get to the heater box. The shop charges 8 or 9 hours to do them.

You'd really have to be 'into' working on cars to want to tackle something like that, it sounds. If I had say some older vehicle I did not want to part with, and say drove it as the sole occupant, I have considered cutting the heater hoses, drilling new holes through the firewall and putting heater core inside the cabin and rig up fan behind it. I have actually pondered that one.
