Steering wheel Shakes over 40 mph

My 2003 nissan xterra just started to shake when I go over 40 mph. and the wheel is pulling to the left. I think i might have hit a pot hole a few days ago but it just started yesterday. What would need to be done to fix that. I dont want to be screwed by my local mechanic!! Thanks

start with this

Start by looking at the tires for bulges or ply seperation. If none are found get wheels balanced. This is the most easy and cheapest way.
Or you can swap front to back and see if it fixes shake. Also look at rims for damage.

Before you swap the wheel out but while you have it jacked up, spin and shake that wheel and inspect for play.

Had the same problem a couple years ago - three wheels were out of balance and one was bent.
