'03 BMW X5 oil filter

It's me again. I'm having trouble locating the oil filter on this thing as well. It looks like it's under a screw off cap on the top front of the engine, but I'm not teribly excited about removing the thing with out some idea if this is the oil filter. Any help out there?

I've never ran into an oil filter located high up on an engine. Ever. Not me anyway.

Yes the oil filter is located under that cap on top of the engine. Remove the oil filter before you drain the oil. Once the filter is removed, the oil in the filter housing will drain down into the pan so it can be drained with the rest of the oil. If you do not do this when you pull the oil filter, the oil in there will go into the pan and not be drained... and therefore mixed with your new oil.
Hope this helps ya,
Billy

ecman51.... There are alot of manufacturers putting the oil filter high on the engine these days. Mercedes has been doing it for many years. One that come to mind is the Saturn and Chevy's with the EcoTec engine. There are others, but thats all I can think of at this hour...

Billy,

If one does not learn something new once in a while, then one may as well cash it in. Thanks for the heads up.

Billy, Man, you are a life saver. Thank you very much. I read the other reply also and both questions have been addressed in great detail. I have a shop manual ordered, but it won't be here until February and I need to service this thing before that. Now, thanks to you, I can proceed. If ya ever need any floor help..........
