Welcome to the forums!
Basically you sand, clean, tape and shoot
only it's not quite that easy
First you will want to repair any rust or dents and prime them. It is hard to say where/how to start sanding. Your final sanding should be a wet sanding with 400 grit paper. But you may need to start with a coarser grit to remove defects in the current paint. Some cars may need to be primed completely before they are ready for the final sanding and paint.
Once your final sanding is done and everything is masked off you need to wipe the car down with a tac cloth - I usually use a lint free rag - damp with paint reducer. You must constantly change or fold the cloth to prevent smearing any contamiments.
Do you have a properly sized air compressor, a good gun and place to apply the paint? Good idea to have a little spraying skill too.
