Altenator Problem?

Was Driving My 96 Ford E150 Conversion Van Home And I noticed a Light I had never known to exist start to flash intermittently(alt Light) and at the same time the needle gauge would discharge in conjunction with the light while at the same time the headlights would dim....Made it home....Ya guys think it may be due for a altenator replacement off the tops of your head? Also can anyone tell me if I can replace from open hood or have to remove dog box without having looked at it yet....Just happy to made it home at this point!! Has 5.8 litre motor

I have a question.
I would like to confirm that the headlights just dimmed along with the alt light and the headlights did not go all the way off along with the alt light

It sounds like the alternator is the most likely, but not the only possible culprit.
