I have a friend trying to replace the rear shocks on my 92 ford tempo. They can't get them off to replace them! There is some type of bolt that is factory clamped(?) to it that they he can't get off. The factory has put a bolt on it, stuck plates over top of the bolt and put little ridges on it that they can't get them off. We called our local shop and they have never heard of such a thing! I thought Tempo's were a dime a dozen and would think that they have changed them before. Anyone know how to remove the bolt?

first, you do not have shocks. You have struts and if you dissassemble them improperly, they can kill you.
So, to the fastener you speak of. Look at this link and look at "figure 3" and click on it. Then look at box labeled "view Z". Is the item listed as "retainer" the part you are speaking of?
If so, then it is designed to remove the bolt as the 2 nuts are part of the assemble called the "retainer" and they are not intended to turn.
If it is another part, post back and we'll take another shot at it.
