1996 Ford Ranger 2.3 4 cyl...help..??

Son's truck; exhaust leak under hood evidenced by loud "unmuffled exhaust sound"; I don't see any cracks; can anyone recommend reliable way to find it? any likely culprit? the "donut" gasket @ manifold?

And...the fuel filter...I read a google piece that said I needed special tools to remove it...?

Best regards,

You should be able to feel where the exhaust is leaking while the motor is running - Obviously you want to do this when the engine is cold!!

Unless mistaken my wife's merc also calls for some special tool to replace the fuel filter. I've replaced her fuel filter without the 'special' tool. The only thing was a little fuel under pressure sprayed out when I disconnected the filter - no biggie if your carefull

There is a special tool for the fuel filter and it's only like $5 at Autozone. There are ways to improvise getting the hose fitting off the filter as well.

This special tool just basically pushes in a plunger type device in the fitting to release the filter.

I had a 96 Ranger as well, and it's a easy change. You will get some fuel leakage, but just don't be smoking while changing it out.

Also, look up near the frame rail where the filter is; after I bought this tool, I noticed there was one attached to the rail, not sure if it came OEM or not.
