Post 96 camry starter problem

I have a 96 camry, 4 valve engine. I was having problem starting the car for a month or so. It used to make a click sound but won't start, but after trying it for 5-6 times, it would start.

Since yesterday the car won't start at all. when I turn on the ignition, I hear a click sound and the sound of some motor running. When I tried this with hood open, I think the motor running is the starter ( not sure).

Is this a starter problem or something else.

Can someone post steps to replace the starter.

I would really appreciate any help.

Thanks.

You need to double check to see if the "running" sound is actually coming from the starter. If it is you may need a new starter. If the running sound is something else, then there's a very good chance that all you need is new contacts and a plunger in the starter solenoid. Toyota starters very rarely good completely bad, but often the solenoid contacts eventually wear to a point where they no longer make a proper connection. The difference in cost between replacing the starter and replacing solenoid contacts can be as much as $200.
