Toyota Electical Question

My Rav 4 headlights dim (car running) when I use my breaks. I'm trying to determine if it's my battery or alternator. When my car is off and I turn the headlights off/on my interior lights dim. (which leads me to a bad battery?) Really don't want to buy both to find out its one or the other. Thanks

Check your cables first to make sure they are not loose, especially the ground cable, and I'm talking about the battery cables. If everything looks good I believe most car parts stores will test the battery and alternator free or you can pay a nominal fee and have a load test done.
