86 Camery stuck in drive

The transmission is stuck in drive. The shifter moves the cable moves. I am at a loss as to what is wrong with it?

Have you checked the shifting arm on the transmission? If not, follow the cable down to the transmission to make sure the cable is moving the shifting linkage. If that's OK, check the linkage on the transmission to make sure it's rotating the shaft that goes into the transmission casing.

Also check the detents actuated by the release button. Do you feel pressure when you press the button?

Sounds like the cable either popped off or snapped.
Pop the hood and follow the cable down to the bell crank on the transmission.
You may find that you can change the postition back to PARK by hand or with pair of pliers grabbing the bell crank.
MAKE SURE THE PARKING BRAKE IS ON FIRST or chock the wheels.
